There have been many times in the past when I’ve hesitated after someone asked me about what I have done in my life. This may be silly, but our society puts a premium on focus and specialization, and people tend to look at you askew when tell them that you’ve done many things that seem wildly different to their eyes. I’ve gotten plenty of those ‘askew’ looks when I tell people about what I’ve done, because I have spent a lot of time in both the sciences and the arts.
I think that as a society we tend to view science and art as so separated out that they belong in different parts of the brain. If you ask people to sort out opposites from a group of words, my guess is that most people would put scientist and artist as opposites, but is this really the case?
